Shinsuke SakakibaraFANUC LTD (FANUC CORPORATION)
Assembly has traditionally been far less automated than machining. FANUC has focused its attentions on assembly and developed a systems for automatically assembling minirobots. This system is already in use at a FANUC factory. A two-armed intelligent robot, developed specially for the system, has both force sensors and a three-dimensional vision sensor on its wrists. The rail unit of the robot is based on a high-speed, high-precision linear motor. The rail unit enables the two arms to operate either independently or in combination, thus maximizing the robot's operability and productivity. Because the required assembly techniques are integrated into the two-armed intelligent robot, the peripheral equipment can be simplified significantly. The resultant automatic assembly system is thus highly cost-effective and can be easily reconfigured. The assembly system is regarded as a kind of IMS system that is capable of assembly with a level of precision equal to that of a skilled operator.
